Outline
Moves in Japan to employ glass as a medium of expression may first be observed in the 1920s, gradually expanding in the postwar years, right up to the 1970s. Tirelessly exploring, artists searched for different ways to handle glass, and over time assembled the optimal environments for their practice. The constant, varied stream of works produced today is a legacy of their curiosity and enthusiasm when it came to exploring possibilities and carving out totally new terrain in pursuit of their own personal expression.
In the creation of their works, the twelve artists featured in “Endless Energy” address ongoing social change and their own surroundings to interpret glass as a material from various viewpoints. In the act of making art they superimpose their own emotions, sensations and beliefs on the material to create form. The works emerging from this endless exploration of what it means to “make” are imbued with a wonderful freshness and powerful energy, and with each encounter we find they arouse our own, innate energy for living in today’s world, and the joy of letting imagination take flight.
