Outline
Australian artists Benjamin Edols (b. 1967) and Kathy Elliott (b. 1964) began collaborating in 1993, and since then have experimented with different ideas in their practice to produce a diverse range of works. This is the first Japanese exhibition dedicated exclusively to their output, and takes a close-up look at their rich artistic realm through pieces spanning the period of their collaboration from the early years, to the present day.
Edols creates mainly blown-glass forms, which Elliott then cuts and carves over a long period, to produce a single, collaborative piece. The lines drawn by Elliott on Edols’ elegant forms flit lightly over the shapes, while carving forms delicate waves, allowing a unique surface that combines the sensibilities of both artists to unfold. At the same time the fluid contours and fine texture of the works are emphasized when connected with light, presenting a visage of mellow beauty. Onto the works of Elliott and Edols, suffused with an aura of freshness generated by an ongoing conversation with materials and light, are projected the artists’ flexible, affinitive way of looking at everyday happenings and their natural surroundings. Each individual work could further be described as a glittering terminus they have pursued in the exploration of their own expression. Their destination is constantly being updated, beckoning our imagination and curiosity to new places.
